ZINC FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH
ZINC can help many of the conditions women experience:
- Period pain. According to several clinical trials zinc can greatly reduce period pain. It works by reducing inflammation and prostaglandins and is also an important part of immune modulating treatment of endometriosis.
- Irregular periods. Zinc helps to regulate the menstrual cycle by nourishing healthy ovarian follicles & promoting ovulation.
- Premenstrual mood symptoms. According to a randomised 2022 clinical trial, zinc supplementation can improve PMS.
- PCOS. Zinc is one of several natural androgen blockers that can reduce testosterone and improve androgen symptoms such as acne and hirsutism (facial hair). It works by inhibiting 5a-reductase and thus decreasing the production of dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
- Endometriosis. Zinc deficiency may play a role in endometriosis, and zinc supplementation can reduce the inflammation of endometriosis, in part by reducing matric metalloproteinases (MMP’S)
- Acne. Zinc is an effective treatment for acne and works by blocking androgens, killing bacteria and slowing the production of sebum and keratin.
- Perimenopause and Menopause. Zinc helps to maintain collagen & tissue health & can relieve the vaginal dryness associated with menopause.
- Thyroid Disease. Along with Iodine & selenium, zinc is essential for the synthesis and activation of thyroid hormone & can prevent the hair loss associated with thyroid disease. Zinc actually promotes thyroid hormone and thyroid hormone improves the absorption of zinc.
- Mood. Zinc supports the hippocampus, which is the part of the brain that can reduce cortisol and thus the stress response.
ZINC DEFICIENCY IN WOMEN
Zinc deficiency affects one in three women and is common with a plant-based diet because plant foods are low in zinc.
Zinc absorption can be impaired by alcohol, stomach medication (PPI’s), hypothyroidism, and hormonal birth control ie. THE PILL
Symptoms of deficiency include:
- Hair loss
- Dermatitis
- Impaired immune function
- White spots on the fingernails
Zinc deficiency tests can be done simply by tasting liquid zinc and getting a reaction. If it tastes awful then zinc levels are ok but if no taste it means there are low levels of zinc in the body.
The blood test of plasma zinc has a normal reference range of 11-23umol/Lor 70-150 ug/dL.
Dosage: Safe and effective dose is 30mg / day or 50mg 4 times a week and should be taken after food and preferably at night.
The best forms are Zinc picolinate and Zinc Citrate.
